Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Alaska and Wasilla resident John Walter Daunning, 79, died due to natural causes at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center May 16, 2011.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Monday, May 23, with visitation one hour prior to the services at Valley Funeral Home, 151 Herning Ave., Wasilla. Burial will follow the services at Aurora Wasilla Cemetery.
John was born May 2, 1932, in Ashland, Wisc., son of Gustave and Mary (Ferguson) Haglund. John moved to Alaska in 1975 and lived in Glennallen and Wasilla. He worked as a heavy equipment operator on the North Slope. John enjoyed woodworking, and had a love for photography and taking pictures of wildlife and landscapes.
The family wrote, “John will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. He loved Hearts and Hands Adult Day Service.”
Surviving are his brothers, Robert Curry and Gerald Curry; and his nieces, Sherry Church and Rhonda Larson.
Valley Funeral Home and Crematory in Wasilla cared for the family.
