Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident Julia Josephine Munyon, 90, passed away on Feb. 28, 2008 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.
A visitation was held Tuesday, March 4, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with a funeral Mass on Wednesday, March 5, at St. Michael’s.
Munyon was born in Dodge, N.D., on Jan. 18, 1918 to Jacob and Barbara Massett. She was somewhere in the middle order of 13 children.
In 1925, she moved with her family to western South Dakota where she helped with farming and all the chores when she was not attending school.
Her early years were difficult and challenging but her faith, sense of humor, and her inner strength enabled her to preserve through the Depression and the war years.
In 1953, she married Irving Munyon in Gettysburg, S.D. Will, Bernie and Jule were born in rapid succession. The children were Munyon’s priority. Her example of dedication and hard work taught everyone to start each day with a good attitude and the determination not to quit until the job was done.
In 1996, Julia and Irving Munyon moved to Palmer, where she continued living a life filled with care and compassion for all of God’s children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving, who passed in August 1999.
Her family wrote, “Julia’s prayers and efforts to share her love and faith continued until Feb. 28, when the angels came to greet her and usher her into Heaven’s gates. She now rests in peace with the Lord having lived over 90 years as a ‘good and faithful servant.’ God bless Julia Munyon!”
She was survived by her son and daughter-in-law Will and Michelle Munyon; son Bernie Munyon; daughter and son-in-law Jule and Mark Ortbahn; grandchildren Wes, Michael, Brad, Lisa, Nathan and Brittany Munyon; Katie and Kelsey Ortbahn and great-grandchild Cole Munyon.
Arrangements were entrusted to Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.
