Palmer resident June Beverly Gaedtke, 89, went to be with the Lord on April 13, 2017.
June was born on December 14, 1927 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin to Theodore and Nola Spangler. She married Herman Gaedtke Jr. on June 21, 1947. June and daughters joined Herman in Alaska in 1962 and have loved it ever since. June worked as a nurse’s aide and a bartender (Delrois), but was most known for her cooking and waitressing at local cafés (Frontier Café, Valley Hotel, Butte Café).
June was stylish at any age, often in a scarf, hat, or blazer, but always in heels. She turned heads even at 89. The thing June loved most was her family. Three generations would often go off to Chitina or Tangle Lakes for a long holiday weekend. “Camping” was RV rough. We enjoyed fishing, boating, playing cards, mostly being together, and she was matriarch of it all. Easter. Thanksgiving and Christmas were always at Nana’s house. Nana was always singing. She attended Real Life Church and was well known as one of the kitchen crew for potlucks.
June is survived by five daughters, Diana Olson, Gloria (Patrick) Hodson of Palmer, JoAnn (Bob) Slaughter of Anchor Point, Patsy Kaspar, Dixie (Duane) Smith of Palmer; and many grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren. June is also survived by her brother, Everett Spangler of Stanchfeild, Minnesota; and sister, Alma (Dave) Ahles of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman and daughter Judy; granddaughter Dana; grandson Brain; and great grandson Spencer.
Services will be held at Real Life Church on the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy. on Saturday April 29, 2017 with Pastor Barry Orzalli officiating. Viewing will be at 1 p.m., funeral at 2 p.m. A celebration of life will follow.
Pallbearers are Robert Hodsdon, Sean Barber, Travis Barber, Kelly Shults, Hayden Shults and Keith Miller. Funeral arrangements were by Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary. Interment will be at a later date with family at Angelus Memorial Park in the Butte.
