Our beloved Mom, “Grammy", Katie, went into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. She was 96. Katie and her twin sister, Marilyn, were born on Thanksgiving Day 1926 in Jerome, Arizona. They followed in the footsteps of their mother; and graduated from Homestead School of Nursing in 1948.

Katie began her nursing career in Pennsylvania before she and her husband, Mike Vasilie, moved to Alaska with their three young children; Marilyn, Kathy, and David, to start a new lifelong adventure in 1954. In 1956, they added their son, Fred, to the family. She worked at Valley Hospital in Palmer until the family moved to the Kenai Peninsula in the spring of 1968. She worked at the Soldotna medical clinic for Dr. Isaak and Dr. Gaede until the hospital opened. She was the first head nurse of CPGH; but soon decided to finish her career as a school nurse; at Kenai Jr. High School and also served as a school nurse in Tyonek and Tustumena before retiring in 1985.

After being widowed for nearly ten years, she met and married Lewis Norman (Norm) MacLeod. They were married just shy of 25 years before Norm passed away in November 2009.

Katie was an active and enthusiastic volunteer in her community. She performed blood pressure checks at the Soldotna Senior Center and enjoyed reading with children as a foster grandparent. She also loved spending time with her Kaladi coffee friends, visiting, and worshiping at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna.

She had a deep-seated love and faith in the Lord. She leaves a legacy of love, kindness and forgiveness to all who knew her.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Marilyn Heazlett; brother, James F. Auld; two husbands, Mike Vasilie and Norm MacLeod; daughter, Marilyn Connell; sons-in-law, Bill Connell and Jeff Foster; and four great grand-children.

She is survived by her sister, Audrey Hill of Palmer; daughter, Kathy Foster; sons, David (Cindy) Vasilie and Fred (Kelly) Vasilie; and bonus daughters, Patricia MacLeod and Nancy Goodwin Smith. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the Soldotna Senior Center on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 2 p.m.
