Lawrence Earl Newby
“Larry” Newby, died at Matsu Regional Medical Center on September 30th at the age of 67 due to medical complications related to Covid.
Larry was born in Stevens Point, WI on May 26th, 1954. He moved to Alaska in 1965 and helped build the family homestead. He followed in his Father’s footsteps and joined the Local 302 Operators Union when he turned 18. On August 14th, 1976 he married the love of his life, Robyn Tierney. Together they raised 4 children and opened their homes to many more. Over the years Larry worked in many industries including fishing and kelping, building the pipeline, captaining ships, helping with the Exxon clean-up, construction and sheetrock, and of course operating. He retired from AS&G in Anchorage and then moved up to Wasilla to enjoy his free time.
Larry was a devoted friend, husband, and father. He lived his life by the “golden rule”, showing kindness and generosity to all he met. He was always there to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor. Larry was the kind of man that still believed that integrity was the one thing a person could control.
A talented guitarist and lover of music, Larry was often found with a guitar in his hand. He spent many evenings jamming with friends; recalling stories and creating memories. He was an animal lover and had a soft heart for those that cannot care for themselves. Larry would often joke “When I die, I want to come back as one of OUR dogs!” He helped care for many animals and people in need over the years.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Robyn and his parents, Gladys and “Tink” Newby. He is survived by his children; Season, Hayley, Lindsay, and Skylar; his grandchildren, Morgan, Preston, Elsa, Quynn, and Mackenzie; and his siblings, Ray, Roy, Ben, and Cheryl.
Larry will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends that feel like family. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a later date in spring 2022. Memorials can be sent to: PO Box 870890, Wasilla, AK 99687
