Lawrence “Larry” Allen Weisz Sr., 78, of Wasilla, Alaska, passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on Monday, October 1, 2018.

Larry was born in Long Beach, California August 9, 1940. He joined the Navy the summer after high school graduation in 1958 and served until 1961. Larry made his way to Alaska in 1965 living in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Tok, and Wasilla. Although Larry worked in different occupations, he had a special talent for retail. He worked at Ben Franklin’s, Payless Drug Store, and Carrs Quality Food Centers.

In 1980, Larry decided to venture out on his own and purchased Farren’s Grocery Store in Tok; the beginning of now 10 Three Bears stores throughout Alaska and 1 store in Montana. Larry’s solid business acumen leaves behind a legacy for generations to come.

Over the course of his life, he served on the AGSD School Board, was a member of The Benevolent and Protective Elks, a member of the NRA, and a lifelong Lion.

Although Larry was a man of business, in his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing, running his equipment, flying, and mining – always looking for the mother lode. He enjoyed moose and duck hunting with his children, grandchildren, and his close friends. After retirement, Larry spent his winters in Kona, Hawaii where he enjoyed having an oasis for his family to visit and spend time together. Larry was a proud grandfather to 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Those close to him will remember him as a successful businessman with a stern nature but with a heart of gold and a sense of humor that could make you blush.

Larry’s final resting place will be at his moose camp on the Taylor Highway – southeast of Tok, Alaska.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janeen of 35 years; children David Weisz Sr. (Traci), Cheryl Kelly (Darrin), Larry Weisz Jr. (Tracie), Richard Weisz, Rachel Sanford (Jason), Jiles Weisz, Andrew Weisz and Jenna Weisz.

He is preceded in death by his father, Norman Weisz; mother, Bonita Jones; sisters Eleanor, Norma, Marilyn and Susie.

A Memorial service will be held October 13th, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the North, in Tok, Alaska. Larry always enjoyed supporting Tok School throughout his years, in lieu of flowers; please donate to the Tok School Sports Activity Fund, PO Box 249, Tok, Alaska 99780.
