Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Long-time Valley resident Lawrence Paul Weiland Jr., 70, retired to his heavenly home Sunday, April 20, 2008. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 25, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Palmer. Father Tom Brundage will officiate.
Weiland was born Oct. 11, 1937 in Thief River, Minn. He moved to Alaska in 1952 when he was 15.
“Larry was a generous, giving individual, always there to lend a hand and give advice to anyone who needed it,” his family wrote. “He will be missed by those he left behind.”
He was preceded in death by parents Lawrence P. Weiland Sr. and Pearl Weiland.
He is survived by his wife, Tyra Guard; children Larry Dean Weiland, Mark Weiland, Tod Weiland, Shelly McGinn, Ladd Weiland, Shawn Glenn; step-children Amber Thornlow, Coral Carpenter, Jasper Knight and Flint Knight; grandchildren Krista Weiland, Cassidy Weiland, Sasha McGinn, Cody McGinn, Hayli Weiland, Lauren Swing, Blake Weiland, LaVan Glenn, Seneca Glenn, Jacoby Glenn, Kylie Thornlow and Kimberly Thornlow; sisters Darlene Eisner and Beverly Perkins; brother Terence Weiland; and first wife Sally Weiland-Harvey.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel & Crematory.
