Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Leo M. Witthoeft, 85, of Moorhead, Minn., died Aug. 20, 2007, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead. Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz.
Witthoeft was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Burleene Township, Todd County, Minn., to Frank William and Anna (Schlie) Witthoeft. He grew up and attended school there. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Nov. 15, 1942, served in the European Theatre of World War II and was discharged March 15, 1946.
He married Hattie Underhill Jan. 1, 1942, in Whipholt, Minn. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service out of Walker, Minn., until retiring to Alaska. He had recently been living in Sun Lakes, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 11, 2003.
Witthoeft is survived by sons Kenneth (Linda) Witthoeft of Anchorage and Brian (Karen) Witthoeft of Moorhead; daughter Janice (Rudolph) Ferdinand of Wasilla; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
