Wasilla resident Lois W. Rone, 88, died July 23, 2011, at Knik Manor Assisted living home in Wasilla.

Funeral services for Lois are at 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, at Valley Funeral Home Chapel, 151 E. Herning Ave., Wasilla. Committal services are at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 28, at Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage, with burial to follow the services at the cemetery.

Lois was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Mount Ida, Ark., the daughter of John Robert and Lyda Arfilla (Smith) Spradling.

Lois moved to Alaska in 1967 and lived in Murphy Dome during the 1970s. She moved to Wasilla to be near her daughter, Myrna, and family. She worked in an ammunition depot in Oklahoma during World War II and then moved to Oregon and worked in Bear Creek during the late 1950s. Before her retirement, she worked in physicians’ offices in Colorado and Alaska in the 1960s and early 1970s.

She was a lifetime member of Wasilla Area Seniors Inc. and was honored as a Volunteers of America volunteer. She enjoyed reading and keeping her journals. She also enjoyed doll making, sewing, fishing, hunting and camping. She especially enjoyed dancing with her husband, Nash, who shared 62 years together before he died in 1998.

Lois will be remembered by her family as “Mama,” a special lady who was kind and giving to all who knew her and to those she met along her life’s journey. Her family said there was nothing more she enjoyed than being on the fishing bank of her favorite spots hoping to catch the “big one.”

“She took great pride in her family and worked hard to make a nurturing home for all of us,” the family wrote. “Though she will be missed, we take solace that she is at peace enjoying Papa’s companionship once again.”

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Myrna and K. Scott Brooks of Big Lake; grandsons, John and wife Charity Hebert of Quinlan, Texas, James and wife Stephanie Hebert of Goldsboro, N.C., Jesse and wife Amanda Brooks of Oceanside, Calif., and Justen and wife Veronica Brooks of Florence, Texas. Also surviving are her granddaughter, Janice Kober and her husband Michael of Pensacola, Fla., and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Nash; son, Stephen; daughter, Myra Hebert; and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in her memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Agency of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Rd. No. 100, Anchorage, AK 99507, or Mat-Su Regional Hospice in Wasilla.

Valley Funeral Home and Crematory of Wasilla cared for the family.
