Longtime Alaskan Lorna Marcia Knaus, 79, died May 9, 2012.
Lorna was Alaskan in every sense of the word — she lived, loved and breathed Alaska. She inspired, taught and mentored many, as a young and old business entrepreneur.
Lorna was born Aug. 9, 1932 in Seattle, Wash. Lorna worked for Alaska Airlines as a purchasing agent for a number of years and as a collections officer or purchasing agent for various other companies before her retirement, although she never really stopped working. Throughout her life she wore many hats; she spent time in the Navy during the Korean War, she trained horses, was a bookkeeper and innkeeper. In 1969, she was hired to open the Willawa Lodge, which is now Mat-Su Resort in Wasilla. She was a unique individual and self-taught in many areas.
Lorna is responsible for starting the Alaskan Foreign Trade Zone, which not only has created jobs, but also brought in some national corporations, which continue to contribute to the local economy. She enjoyed traveling to Taiwan for business and adventure, and made close friends there.
Lorna respected all life, plants, animals and every human being she came across. Lorna had the gift of accepting and loving people unconditionally without expectations. She gave freely of herself, helped others in need and passed on her love, kindness and knowledge.
“Lorna will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her,” her family said.
Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date
Surviving are her two sons, Lornn and Lynn; her granddaughters; several great-grandchildren; and her brother, Charles, all of Washington. She leaves behind many long-term friends and a legacy of what it takes to not only be an inspiration, but also an Alaskan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister.
Arrangements entrusted to the Cremation Society of Alaska. An online guestbook can be signed at alaskacremation.com.
