Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Mabel L. Ulrich, 95, of Gakona went peacefully to be with our Lord on Nov. 13, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.
Mabel was born in Hanover, N.Y., to Clifford and May Libby on Oct. 24, 1918. She graduated from Gowanda High School in New York in 1936. On Feb. 26, 1937, she married Mark Ulrich of Cassadaga, N.Y., and her life’s journey began. They had three children — Warren, Karen and Dianne.
Mabel was very active in the communities where she lived. She was a 4-H Club leader, Grange member, earned her RN degree in 1955, was very active in church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She received an associate’s degree from Van Nuys Junior College in California. In 1957, they moved to California, then in 1974 to Chugiak and to Gakona in 1993, where they made their home. She has traveled across the states and all over Alaska.
“Grandma,” as many knew her, loved to sew, crochet, do word search puzzles and made many Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. Mabel was also an avid reader.
“She was loved very much and will be missed tremendously by family and friends,” her family wrote.
Surviving are her son, Warren (Nell) Ulrich; daughter, Dianne Hagerty; son-in-law Jim Crabtree; grandchildren, Bonnie (Chuck) Pierce, Jerry Colby, Deanna (Brian) Price, Cathy Ulrich, Warren (Kim) Ulrich II, Kendall Crabtree, Patti (Doug) Taylor, Lori (Bruce) Stedman, Michele (Garrett) Reimer and Monte (Lorraine) Hagerty; 17 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Wanda Price; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers; two sisters; husband, Mark; daughter, Karen; grandson, Josh; and son-in-law, Charles Hagerty.
Funeral services will be later in the spring in Glennallen.
