She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, The Red Hat Society, and the Valley Quilter's Guild. She was active with the Iditarod, especially in its starting years. She was the first secretary of the Iditarod Trail Race Committee. She housed both mushers and dogs in Nome, and later in Wasilla.

She participated in the American Cancer Society's Walk for Life and made a small quilt for the group's auction. She was a Sunday school teacher at Good Shepherd.

She loved playing darts, dancing, traveling, going to plays and going out for fine dinners. She deeply loved animals. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and made many crib quilts, which were given to friends for their newborn babies.

Her family writes, &#8220Dorothy was very proud of her Scottish heritage. She was very independent, and all through her chemotherapy, radiation, heart failure and stroke, she constantly gave her all to keep working, cook meals and keep up the house until her body just gave out. She was very generous to her family, friends and causes she believed in. She loved to throw get-togethers and cook foods from various parts of the world. While working for the Anchorage Daily News, she was fiercely loyal to her customers and highly respected by all of her fellow employees. Her caregivers enjoyed her sense of humor and enjoyed having her for a patient. She will be greatly missed by all.”

She is survived by her husband, Larry Winter of Wasilla; son, Scott Pegau of Homer; daughter, Sharon Pegau of Spokane, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Cathy Pegau of Homer; granddaughters, Robin Pegau and Kenzie Pegau; sisters Mary Gunn of Tucson, Ariz., and Wilma Frew of Elgin, Scotland.
