Fife, Washington — Margaret “Joy” Kopperud passed away in her home on June 15th, 2022, at the age of 78 from natural causes. Margaret was born in what was once known as Madras, India. She was raised in Bangalore, India but completed much of her schooling in Ooty (Udhagamandalam), India.
As an adult, Margaret moved to the United Kingdom to attend nurses training at the Chelmsford and Essex Hospital in Chelmsford Essex. In 1963 she became qualified as a State Registered Nurse (SRN) and soon thereafter she completed her midwifery training. Once qualified as a midwife Margaret embarked on a career in obstetrics that spanned nearly 50 years. Margaret regarded her time as a midwife as a truly rewarding experience, especially her time spent with the obstetric flying squad in the UK assisting women with home childbirth.
Margaret later moved to the United States where she would meet Noel Kopperud whom she had three children with, Ainslie, Alex, and Daphne. Margaret’s life and work would take her to Oregon, Washington and as far north as Alaska where she would reside for many years while raising her children. She continued to provide essential women’s healthcare services to many of the communities that she lived in and eventually became an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
Margaret was someone who not only cared deeply for her family, but someone who also felt a strong sense of responsibility to help women and children. The contribution that Margaret made to the lives of many will be felt for some time to come. Her love of travel and desire to consume culture in all its forms is something that will be fondly remembered by those who knew her best.
Margaret is survived by her children Ainslie Kopperud, Alex Kopperud, and Daphne Deschamps; her grandchildren, Colton, Olivia, and Isla; her siblings, Anne Morrell, Shirley Nelson, and Walter Sobol.
A private memorial service for Margaret has already taken place. However, anyone wishing to make a donation in Margaret’s memory are encouraged to consider the American Cancer Society.
