Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Son, brother, dad, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and good neighbor Mark A. “Sonny” Shugak, 45, unexpectedly collapsed and died July 28, 2010, at his home in Wasilla.
Mark was born Jan. 26, 1965, in Anchorage. Mark’s lifetime included commercial fishing, he was trained in carpentry and was in the Army National Guard.
“Mark enjoyed sport fishing, the outdoors and wildlife. He loved his family and kept us laughing with his teasing humor whenever we got together,” wrote his family. He especially loved his cats, dogs and chickens.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Senafont Shugak Sr. (1928-1986) of Old Harbor. He leaves his son, Mark Shugak Jr.; daughters, Lenora Snyder and Charmaine Shugak; and grandchildren, Keira Arkanakyak, Leah Nelson and Lexus Nelson, all residing near their mother and grandmother Peggy Shugak in Togiak.
He is lovingly missed by his mother, Vera Shugak; brothers, Donald Raymond (Edna) Shugak, Tobias Wayne (Shirley) Shugak and Senafont (Arlene) Shugak Jr.; sisters, Mildred (Adam) Aposik, Constance Marie (Doug) VanWingerden, Katherine Mary O(Christian) Chuckwuck, Ruth Rovena (Todd) Alm, Rebecca Anne (Keith) Jensen and Rachel Kay Shugak; and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Valley Funeral Home, 151 East Herning Ave. in Wasilla. Graveside services will follow at Wasilla-Aurora Cemetery. A memorial potluck will be at the home of his niece, Karla Delong, at 1650 N. Legacy Lane in Palmer, following the graveside service.
