Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Mary J. McDonald, 95, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., passed away at the local hospital on April 9, 2010.
She was born in Mitchell, Ore., on Jan. 1, 1915, to Samuel C. and Lillian V. (Richards) Johnson. She grew up on the family ranch south of Spray, Ore., where she started school and later attended a boarding school for high school in The Dalles.
Mary married Garnet Snider in The Dalles and lived for many years in Wasilla. Over many years, Garnet and Mary boarded many children to assist them in attending school in Wasilla. Garnet passed away in 1986. She married Jesse Coberth McDonald 1992 in The Dalles and lived on the McDonald homestead in Chenowith, Ore. Jesse passed away in July 1999. Mary was very active in the development and maintenance of the Mid-Columbia Senior Center. She was a homemaker, a member of the Evangelical Church and the Senior Center.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Lynne Snider Clark; nieces, Sue Pratt and Jean Hampton; foster daughter, Ruth Stewart; step-son, Tom Snider; sister-in-law, Norma Clark and her husband Alvin; brother-in-law Russell McDonald and his wife Jeanne; Hollis McDonald and wife Judy, and Larry Kaufman and wife Gail.
Private cremation held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
A memorial service will be held by the family at a later date at the Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Center or Meals-On-Wheels.
