Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Mary Louise Pope, 80, of Iraan, Texas, died May 26, 2012, in Iraan General Hospital with family members at her bedside.
Mary, the oldest of four daughters, was born Oct. 26, 1931, to A.E. “Buddy” and Louise Pope at her grandparent’s ranch on Cedar Creek near Barksdale, Texas.
The family lived in Camp Wood, Texas, for several years before moving to Batesville, Texas, and then to Uvalde, Texas. She was a graduate of the class of 1949 from Uvalde High School.
She lived in Fredericksburg, Texas, for many years, where her children attended school. She worked there as a nurse before moving with her sisters to Wasilla, where they worked together for more than 20 years in a family business. After retirement, she and two of her sisters, Hazel Jones and Lynda Richards, decided to come home to Texas, where they resided together until her death.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her youngest daughter, Sandra Marie Routheaux of Big Lake; and a grandson, Samuel Welton.
Surviving are her sisters, Gayle Harvey of Wasilla, Hazel Jones and Lynda Richards, both of Iraan, Texas; son, Dennis Welton and wife Joyce of Iraan, Texas; daughter, Kathy Durst and husband Jerry of Fredericksburg, Texas; son, Ernest Welton of Wasilla; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Her ashes will be interred in the family plot at the Barksdale Cemetery.
