MaryAnn P. Smith

Lifelong Alaskan and Wasilla resident MaryAnn Patricia Smith, 78, passed away June 20th, 2021, surrounded by her loved ones in her hometown of Wasilla.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Wasilla VFW, 301 E Lake View Ave, on July 10th at 2:00 pm. A potluck will follow the service.

MaryAnn was born May 29, 1943, in Fairbanks AK, to Hilbert and Patricia Olsen. She is Athabaskan Indian, Gwich’in, from the Ft. Yukon area. Her family lived along the Alaska railroad, as her father was a section foreman. They moved to Wasilla when she was 3. She graduated from Wasilla High and later married David Smith. They started Wasilla’s first block plant and concrete business, Wasilla Aggregate, in the late ‘60s.

MaryAnn worked for the Alaska Railroad in the dining car. She was a bookkeeper, business owner, truck driver, worked in Wasilla schools, skilled salmon filet-er, and professional cook, among other occupations, but mostly she was a dedicated and loving mother.

She was positive and kind, loved canning, cooking, and sharing those skills with her children, especially her daughter-in-law, Darlene. She loved being with family and friends, and her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys.

She is survived by her sons, Darrell, Tim (Darlene) Smith, and daughter, Lori (Jason) Hahn; her grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Darrell, Brittany, Rikki, Kristina, Rebekah, Timmy and Jacob; great grandchildren, Sam, Riley, Liam, Carter, Kensley, and Charlotte; and six siblings, Jean, Eddy, Larry, Ronny, Freddy, and Annette.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Sylvia, Ruby, Johnny, and Danny.

We love you, Mama, and take comfort that you are reunited with your Mama.
