Mason Smith

March 01, 1943 - November 28, 2025 Mason Dwight Smith, 82, of Lewistown, Montana, passed away peacefully in Palmer, Alaska, surrounded by his family after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 1, 1943, in Lewistown to Dwight and Nora Smith, Mason carried a deep love for his hometown throughout his life. In 1977, Mason traveled to Alaska on a whim—an adventure that turned into 26 unforgettable years. He built a life there, forged lifelong friendships, raised his family, and embraced the spirit of the Last Frontier before eventually returning home to Lewistown. Mason was a devoted father and grandfather whose greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his daughters, Kayla (Severin) Stalmarck of Palmer, Alaska, and Kodi Smith of Las Vegas; and by five treasured grandchildren—Wyatt and Viggo Stalmarck, Dawsyn Jai, Jackson, and Ruby Vance. He also leaves behind countless nieces and nephews who adored him deeply. One niece summed up what many felt when she said, “They broke the mold when they made you.” Known for his quick wit, dry humor, and one-of-a-kind personality, Mason had a way of making an impression wherever he went. A man of many passions, he was an avid gun enthusiast and took great joy in being part of the Snowy Mountain Muzzleloaders Club, where he found camaraderie and community. He also had a lifelong love for antiques and oddities—never one to miss an estate sale, always on the lookout for hidden treasures and pieces with stories to tell. His laughter, his stories, and his unmistakable charm made him unforgettable to all who knew him. Mason will be returned to Montana to have his ashes interred at the Winifred cemetery with countless loved ones this summer. A celebration of life will be held in his honor. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered for the humor he brought into the world, the adventures he embraced, and the steadfast love he had for his family.
