On Saturday, October 11, the Mat-Su Health Foundation (MSHF) will host the first-ever “Community Choice Health Summit” for the Big Lake and Houston communities. The goal of this pilot project is to co-create health-focused initiatives alongside community members for maximum community-driven benefits. This joint convening of residents will work to answer the question, “What local wellness initiative deserves your community’s attention in the next 365 days?” Based on the guidance of summit participants, attendees will vote to choose one or two projects that will receive funding from MSHF to bring them to life.
“This summit was designed to intentionally engage with residents, empowering them to guide community-focused health projects,” said Esther Pitts, MSHF president and chief executive officer. “Centering local voices to create lasting and healthy change is a huge part of how we’re deepening our work alongside Mat-Su Valley communities. This summit is hopefully the first of many to come for the Mat-Su.”
The health summit will be held at Houston High School on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is free to attend. MSHF will provide facilitation, food, beverages, childcare, and transportation support for attendees. This community-based event is intended for Big Lake and Houston residents, but residents of other Valley communities can attend and observe.
