Michael L. Bird

Michael L. Bird of Pahoa, Hawaii, passed away on July 2, 2020, at home following a long illness. He was born in Kalispell, Montana, on July 18, 1946, to William Hoyt and Lucille Carter Bird.

Michael graduated from Kalispell High School and Northwest Nazarene College. He worked for the National Forest Services, Alaska Emergency Management Agency, HUD, and Coastal Villages Region Fund. Michael retired to Hawaii in 2010. He used his biological studies to plant and grow a virtual “Garden of Eden” with two of everything, specializing in cacao production and chocolate making.

Michael was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Teddy Bird, Eugene Bird, Carol Wasinger, Marilyn Meyers, and Bob Bird.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Schumpert Bird of Hawaii, and children, Michael D Bird of Wasilla, Alaska; Jesse D. Bird of Longmont, Colorado; and Katie Bird and Matt Raney of Wasilla; as well as his grandchildren, Owen Bird, Brooklynn Bird, and Indy Raney of Wasilla.

No services were held due to Covid restrictions. Michael’s ashes will be scattered at a later date at Ashley Creek in Kalispell, on his beloved “Talking House Plantation” in Hawaii, and in the Yukon River in Alaska to be reunited with the many Alaskan villages that he loved and served.
