Mildred Elizabeth Young, 92, died May 5, 2012, at her home in Wasilla.
The family held a private celebration of life and Mildred’s ashes will be scattered in the Wrangell Mountains.
Mildred was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Comstock, Neb., to John and Mary (Todd) Mills.
The family wrote: “Mildred Elizabeth Young, our mother and grandmother, loved being the matriarch of her family. Mildred hosted umpteen Thanksgiving dinners, she attended family graduations and weddings, loved gardening, and enjoyed reading and playing cards. She loved Alaska, the Alaskan life style and the wildlife wandering through her yard. Mildred recently had her ears re-pierced at a tattoo parlor when she visited family in Arizona and ‘played the slots’ in Las Vegas. Mildred’s determination and indomitable spirit enabled her to remain independent in her own home after 90 and she even took up oil painting. Faith in God and her patriotic spirit sustained her purposefulness throughout her life. We miss her greatly. She had a lively sense of humor, a zest for life, was full of surprises and we believe there will be more surprises in the future.”
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas W. Young.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred R. Alberts (Merle Alberts) of Mohave Valley, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. Young (Laurel Young) of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Marcell A. Martin (Clifford Martin) of Palmer; grandson, Thomas J.
