Milton Mabry Peery, Sr. died peacefully in his sleep the morning of April 4, 2017. He was 84 years old. He leaves behind a loving wife of almost 50 years, original Colonist Mary Ada (nee Lee), seven sons: Joe, Dave, Rob, Ron, Don, Ed, and Milt, Jr., three surviving daughters: Debbie, Roberta, and Connie, scores of grand-, great-grand-, and great-great-grandchildren, and his brother, Stanley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Delia, brothers, Jim and Bill, sister, Betty, and daughters, Mary Jane and Leslie. “Sarge” lived a life of service, entering the Air Force in 1950, was active duty for 20 years, then served the AF another 10 years in Civil Service.
Generous to a fault, he gave of his time, attention, and finances to so many people and causes over the years. From playing Santa for thousands to driving high school sports teams to away games, he always found ways to do for others. While having a huge family, he was “Uncle Milt” and “Grandpa” to many others who were chosen family. Born in Alabama, raised in Ohio, stationed in Texas, Spain, and many other domestic duty stations, he came to Alaska just after the “Quake of 1964”. He said often to his wife, Mary, “Babe, we sure live in the right place.” Raised a Christian, he came to a much stronger faith in the last 25 years of his life and cherished visits from the clergy in his life. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on April 22 at Anchorage Lutheran Church, 1420 N Street. Disposition and arrangements were handled by Legacy Funeral Home – Heritage Chapel.
