Moose calving season is here

MAT-SU — The Alaska Department of Public Safety issued an advisory over the weekend that moose calving season is here and issued a warning to Alaskans not to get too close to recently birthed moose calves.

“As Alaskans, some of us might be lucky enough to see a moose born right in our backyard, but remember that cow moose can become extremely aggressive and attack people if they fear for the safety of their new calves,” reads the DPS advisory. “While many people might think that moose are less dangerous than bears, more people in our state are injured by moose than by bears each year. Always keep your distance from moose, give them plenty of space, and never approach, no matter it’s age.”

DPS also warned Alaskans that feeding moose is illegal and hefty fines may be levied against those caught feeding wildlife.
