Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Myrtle Vivian Jorgensen (Hughes) passed away peacefully Jan. 24, 2017 due to pneumonia complications.
Myrtle was born Feb. 16, 1934, in Juneau, Alaska, to her mother Katheryn Annin-off. Due to circumstances, she was raised in The Johnson’s Children’s Home in Juneau, Alaska, by Lyle and “Aunty” Johnson. After finishing school, Myrtle became a dental assistant. Myrtle met Albert Jorgensen at a children’s home function, and were married July 10, 1961. They had 3 children: Albert, Roger and Kamilla.
The Family moved to the Mat-Su Valley in the early 70s and built their family home. Albert and Myrtle designed their home to be very tall, with Al saying, “They’d get to heaven quicker if they ran up the stairs during the rapture.” Myrtle was an excellent baker and cook. She was known for being the baker at Little Beaver Lake Camp for many years, always having fresh bread, cinnamon rolls and goodies. Many summers were spent there, it was a great time with the family, friends, and the Lord.
Myrtle is survived by her sister Shirley (Gary) Stearns; sister-in-law Jeanne Hughes; son Albert Jorgensen (Evelyn); and daughter Kamilla Diamond (Ernest); grandchildren Jamie (Alan) Wilby; Angela (Zackary) English, Richard Powell III; Sondra Powell; Sarah Diamond; Jesse Diamond; great grandchildren Emilee Christianson; Gage and Jaikeb Wilby; Kahri and Lukas English; Gabriel McCasland; Jace Diamond; Dallas Bailey; Nevaeh Diamond, Emry and Kinsey Hanson; and an extensive family more.
Myrtle is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert; her son Roger; and her brothers Stanley, Frank, Roscoe, and Edward Hughes.
The memorial service for Myrtle will be Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Matanuska Assembly of God, 865 W. Auklet Ave. in Palmer, Alaska. 907-745-2540.
