Longtime Palmer resident Norman (Norm) Schuyler Rousey, 85, passed away Jan. 17, 2014, at his home in Palmer surrounded by his family.

A celebration of life is planned at 2 p.m., Feb. 9 at the Palmer Depot. The Elks also will have a short service at 3:30 p.m., Feb. 16.

Norm was born Aug. 27, 1928, in the home of his grandparents in Pomeroy, Ohio, to Dr. Schuyler C. Rousey and Katerine Calkins Rousey. He graduated Athens High School, Bowling Green State U, went on to the University of Southern Cal and finished a Ph.D. in administration from Ohio U. Norm’s first job was in Palmer teaching and coaching football. He retired from the school district in 1981 as Superintendent of Schools.

His awards and accomplishments are too numerous to list here and include recording two songs for what was then Crest Records while working on his Masters at USC.

He married Katie Dryden in August 1959 and they produced three wonderful children whom he loved dearly. A wonderful article was written about him in the Sunday, Jan. 26, issue of the Frontiersman newspaper. He was humble, fair and loved and remembered by many for his kindness, understanding and for leading by example. We can truly say he walked the talk although he mostly just walked it with less talk.

Norm is survived by his wife, Katie; daughters, Rhonda Rousey-Knopp (David) and Jenny Rousey-Dick (Jim); son, Norman David Rousey (Sarah); grandsons, Schyler Knopp, Tracen Knopp, Dawson Knopp and Reed Rousey; his dearest and oldest friends, Alvin Rosser and David (Red) Evans; nephew, Roland Rousey (Suzie) and Jerry Yoakam; nieces, Kittye Lewis, Tanya Canier, Rita Mees (Larry) and Barbara Sims; and extended family in Ohio, Pat, Steve, Peggy and J.D. Story.

He was preceded in death by his dear friend, Bob Story (Nona); mother, Katerine Millikan; father, Schuyler Rousey; grandmother, Norma Peoples; much-loved step-grandfather, Judge C.E. Peoples; brother, Hugh Rousey; sisters, Sarah Yoakam and Jenny Tarowskey; nephew, Terry Tarowskey; and niece, Bonnie Boug.
