Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Patricia Josephine Sandvik, age 82, died June 13, 2016, at Mat Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska. Patty was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and came to Alaska in 1946, with her father, when she was 12 years old. Originally they lived in Fairbanks where her father worked for the University of Alaska Experimental Farm and her two uncles operated gold mining claims nearby. She attended Fairbanks High School and then, after moving to the Matanuska Valley, finished her schooling with the Palmer class of 1953. She worked for many small businesses in the area and retired after 25-plus years at the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union. Pat was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, a March of Dimes volunteer, Cub Scout leader and Little League score keeper. She enjoyed painting, drawing, sewing, crocheting, and wine making for which she received a number of Grand Champion and First Place ribbons at the Alaska State Fair.She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene V. Kirsch; mother, Margaretta Kirsch; brother, Rev. Eugene Victor Kirsch and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Pat leaves behind her four children; Denise Walling, Curtis Sandvik, Del Sandvik — all of Palmer; Mel Sandvik of North Hollywood, California; grandson, Joseph Walling; and son-in-law, Bruce Walling. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Mat Su Regional Medical Center for their professional and attentive care which made her final days more comfortable.
