Longtime Sutton resident Paul Erwin Johnson passed away February 8, 2019 in Wasilla. He was 101 years old.
Paul was born in Gordon Township in Todd County, Minnesota on August 6, 1917. Paul joined the Army in 1942. He landed in Normandy, France at Utah beach on D-Day. He earned a Bronze Star and five other bars for his service at rank of Corporal. Paul loved to hunt and woodworking. He farmed in Minnesota until 1956 and moved to Alaska in 1957 where he worked as a mechanic. He worked for Evans Jones Coal Company until they closed. In 1968 he moved to Healy and worked for Vitro Minerals Corporation and Usibelli Coal Mine. He drove school bus in Healy before moving to Skagway and worked for the White Pass and Yukon Rail Road. He retired and moved back to Sutton in 1980.
Paul is survived by 4 children Martin, Merle, Lee Anne and Terry; 3 Grandchildren Brian, Eric and Monica; 8 Great Grandchildren Easton, Bryce, Madison, Morgan, Katelyn, Emma, Avery and Lane.
Services will be March 23, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Sutton Bible Church. 15772 N. Glenn Highway, Sutton, Alaska.
