Peggy Rachel Spindler

Peggy Rachel Spindler (Karmun), was born, Oct. 19, 1963, in Kotzebue, Alaska, to Alice and Harry Karmun. She died March 19, 2016, from complications associated from end-state cancer.

Peggy graduated from Deering High School, attended two years of Business College, and went to work for various NANA companies throughout her life. She worked as the administrative assistant for Purcell Security, worked many years in Kotzebue as the executive board secretary for NANA Region Corporation, and later transitioned to the NANA Lands Department.

Peggy also worked at Red Dog Mine as Human Resources & Benefits Coordinator, then left Red Dog Mine to work for Fire River Gold, and recently ended her career working for NANA Construction/GSI.

Peggy had one son, Adrian (19 yrs.), who preceded her in passing. Adrian and his fiancé, Ariel Martin, created a wonderful granddaughter, Adriann Izzellah Spindler, of Sacaton, Arizona. Peggy so loved and doted on her, spoiling her beyond reason. Peggy is now reunited with Adrian, and many other family members.

Also preceding her in passing were her father, Harry Karmun; sisters, Winona (Beep) and Joyce Karmun; and brother, First Harry Jr.

Peggy is survived by her husband of over 20 years, Thomas Spindler; her mother, Alice Karmun; sisters, Maxine Barr, Sandra (Dickie) Moto, Mamie Karmun; brothers, Alfred Karmun, Harry (Cynthia) Karmun Jr., and Jack (Christine) Karmun; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Having grown up engaged in rural Alaska sports, Peggy was a strong community supporter, especially when it came to helping children and youth sports. She especially loved her Seattle Seahawks, working directly assisting the organization with its annual Alaska 12 Tour charity activities. Never seeking credit, she was simply known to many as Mamahawker and helped arrange for Seahawk players and cheerleaders to volunteer time and interaction with sick children at Alaska Native Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. She helped fundraise for many charity causes, most notably through her favorite 501c3 non-profit charity, which she helped found and operate, Mat-Su Sea Hawkers, Inc.

Per Peggy’s wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral service. The family will host a Celebration of Life at 5 p.m. April 16, 2016, at the Palmer Elks Lodge, 2600 N Barrys Resort Dr., Wasilla, AK 99654.

In lieu of flowers, people wishing to help may make a memorial contribution to either Mat-Su Sea Hawkers, Inc., or to the family at P.O. Box 1832 – Palmer, AK 99645.
