Philip Eugene Moore Sr., 57, died July 2, 2012, in Big Lake.
Pastor Gary Oathout will officiate at a celebration of life ceremony at 2 p.m., July 27 at Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning Ave., Wasilla.
Philip was born in Whittier, Calif., April 7, 1955, at Murphy Memorial Hospital to William and Anita Moore. Philip spent his young years in sunny California. He went to Whittier Elementary then Cal High. He loved to run track.
Philip started a love for the sport of boxing in a gym in Compton, Calif., where he sparred with some of our great pros.
Philip followed his father to Alaska in 1980. He worked for Cisco Insulating for years. He also drove trucks and did roofing. He joined the National Guard in 1984 and left with an honorable discharge.
Philip and his wife Linda of 30 years moved to the Valley in 1986. Philip tried to find a sport for his sons; he found Palmer Boxing Club. His love for boxing kept them busy training for bouts around Alaska. He kept many boys off the streets while training them — or anyone who was interested in the sport. He and his sons, Linkus, LaMont and Philip II, spent many bonding hours sharing a love of boxing in the ring, and hitting speed bags and heavy bags.
His second love was building high-performance engines. Philip and Philip II would be walking out the door saying, “Moore power.” It was a clue they’d be under the hood of their Monte Carlo for hours tweaking the motor to make it faster. He also loved his Harley.
He said, “Going on a run down the highway made (me) feel free,” but always had time for his first love — boxing. He never stopped sparring and having a good old workout on the heavy bag.
Philip always respected the Lord God and tried hard to follow the road to glory. He attended Church on the Rock in Meadow Lakes.
Phillip’s grandchildren were what kept him young at heart. When they came in the room he would light up. He was the biggest kid of all. He loved his children and adored his grandchildren.
Philip was known for his kind heart and quiet disposition. He would drop what he was doing to help out his friends at anytime. He will be missed by so many.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Moore of Big Lake; sons, Linkus Swinson of Juneau, LaMont Swinson of Oregon and Philip Moore II of Big Lake; daughters, Michelle Moore of California and Stacey Moore of Big Lake; mother, Anita; and sister, Jennifer Moore. He has 15 grandchildren, all loved dearly.
Preceding him in death were his father, William Moore; and his granddaughter, Avery Swinson.
Donations can be sent to The Moore Family, P.O. Box 520274, Big Lake, AK 99652.
