Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Houston resident, Phillip Ray Campbell, 69, died Dec. 26 at his home in Houston.
Memorial services were held Saturday at the West Valley Family Church of the Nazarene, 1300 South Ridgecrest Road in Wasilla. Pastor Paul J. Trissel officiated.
Mr. Campbell was born Feb. 4, 1939 to Orville and Zelphina (Percy) Campbell in Monte Vista, Colo. He attended school until the 10th grade. Mr. Campbell moved to Anchorage in 1964 where he became a laborer for the Anchorage Water Works from which he retired in the late 1980s. He lived in Wasilla, Palmer and Big Lake before making Houston his home. Mr. Campbell was a member of the West Valley Family Church of the Nazarene. He volunteered with the Red Cross and Head Start program. He crocheted afghans for friends and family and needy strangers. Mr. Campbell enjoyed race cars and drove sprint cars on the dirt tracks in Anchorage in the 1960s.
“What he knew well he did well. Phillip was generous to those he loved and would give you the shirt off his back,” the family wrote.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his son, Ray Campbell of Prince George, B.C.; daughter, Evelyn Woodhurst of Vancouver, Wash.; grandsons, Brett, Anthony and Jacob Woodhurst all of Vancouver, Wash.; granddaughter, Hannah Woodhurst of Vancouver, Wash.; brother, William Campbell of Calif.; sisters, Marjorie Beau of Alabama, Phyllis Stout of Texas and Louise Upchurch of Fla.; and his parents Orville and Zelphina Campbell.
