Proud of Alaskans for speaking out

By To the editor:

In my nineties, I now use age as an excuse for many things, including to be silent in this time of audible protests, but I am thankful for those younger who are speaking out. On June 3, Elizabeth Ripley wrote a Community Spectrum article in the Frontiersman describing the background in which she grew up. It was a nation emerging from segregation and racism, which has continued to today. She stressed the need for change in all aspects of our society, “We need to call out racism when we see it”, she wrote. On June 5, in the Anchorage Daily News Sen. Lisa Murkowski was quoted as supporting the former defense secretary, Jim Mattis when he said President Trump was a threat to the Constitution and to the Nation as he was dividing it. Murkowski was also quoted as saying she had struggled to find the right words to talk about the moment of reckoning over systemic racism in America. On Saturday, June 6 , in Palmer, a group of high school graduates, organized by Aurora Till and others, met with hundreds more for an orderly and peaceful protest rally to end racism and violence.

I am proud of these Alaskans who have spoken out to make this a more equitable and safer place to live for all people.
