Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

R. Geoffrey Shenk, 69, died at noon, Nov. 15, 2013, at McLaren Northern Regional Hospital, Petoskey, Mich.
He was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Detroit, Mich., and after completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Michigan State University, he resided in Durand, Mich., teaching junior high school social studies. He then relocated to Palmer, where he taught upper elementary grades for 22 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, thoroughly enjoying Alaska adventures. In 1997, he retired from education and moved to Boyne City, Mich. He immersed himself in nature and would spend time gardening, hunting and appreciated the outdoors.
Surviving are his loving wife, Suzanne Shenk of 47 years; daughter, Lisa (Bryan) Dewey of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and grandchildren, Erika Dewey, 6, and Caleb Dewey, 3.
Visitation was Nov. 21 at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City, Mich. The funeral is at 11 a.m., Nov. 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Boyne City with visitation at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the service at Dyer Cemetery in Bay Township on Camp Daggett Road, Boyne City, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Down Syndrome Association, Boyne City Food Pantry or the First Presbyterian Church of Boyne City.
