Ralph Ellsworth Mann
Ralph Ellsworth Mann, 77, of Wasilla, Alaska, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022. Ralph was born June 4, 1944, in Cumberland, Wisconsin, to John Mann and Lucile (Wood) Mann. His family later moved to Minnesota where they farmed.
Ralph graduated high school and enlisted in the US Army. In 1964, he was stationed in Alaska and fell in love with all the state had to offer. He loved everything about the outdoors from flying to hunting, trapping and fishing. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Ralph worked for Alaska Fish and Game and Alaska State Troopers. He decided to use a dog team instead of a snowmobile for his work. This fueled a fire and he began raising sled dogs. He used these dogs not only for work but he also enjoyed competing in races. In 1976, his rookie year running the Iditarod, he finished the race in 6th place.
He married the love of his life, Anne S. Curtis, on August 3. 1986. He went on to build two beautiful homes with custom furniture to fill the rooms. When Ralph wasn’t in his wood working shop, he could be found in the “Garden of Good and Evil,” or planting beautiful flowers.
Ralph was the oldest of seven children, brother Steve (Cheryl); sisters Sharon, Lorinda (Gary), Julie, Mary Anne (Mel), Step-daughters Kelly and Shelly DeJansen and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne S. Curtis, parents, and his brother David.
Ralph always made time to take a break and listen to the cranes, play with his dogs or visit with friends and family. He liked to share stories about his Alaskan adventures. He will be missed by all who loved him and remembered for his stories and craftsmanship with his wood project.
