Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Ralph Rollins, Sr., 79, died Nov. 1 at Graceful Living Assisted Living Home in Anchorage.
Ralph was born Aug. 5, 1930 in Portland, Ore. He served in the Army and was a merchant marine. He married Grace Nelson and had a daughter, Suzzie. He married Babe Berchen in 1953. Ralph married Marta Cronk and had two sons, Billy and Mat. He married Sharon M. Tipton in 1991.
Ralph raced cars from 1955-1964. He was a member of the WHRA Racing Association. He raced throughout the Pacific Northwest. Ralph moved to Eagle River in 1965. He ran Fire Lake Service Station for many years. Ralph became a pilot and hunting guide. He opened Chugiak Auto Hospital until 1991, when he moved to Wasilla and retired.
In his early 1970s Ralph went back to racing at Capital Speedway.
He is survived by his son, Ralph Rollins Jr.; daughter, Vivian (Pumpkin) Holsclaw; Nikki Drake; five grandchildren, Shanda, Patrick, Christopher, Bailey and Brenda; three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Alexys and Cory; step-sons, Antone and Joseph Simas; step-daughter, Shammy Dalghetty; and 11 step-grandchildren, Josh, Steven, Justin, Latheya, Sam, Koby, McKensie, Dexter, Donnie, Nicholas and Brittney.
Ralph was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick and Marty, and a brother, Harry Ingram.
