Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Rev. Reeves C. Havens Jr., 94, of Fairview, Tenn., retired minister of the United Methodist Church, died Nov. 9, 2010, in Franklin, Tenn. His career as a clergyman and chaplain spanned seven decades. He received a bachelor’s of divinity in 1942 and his national chaplaincy accreditation in 1959. He and his wife of 68 years, Geraldine, served churches in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York from 1942-1952, as missionaries in Nome and Ketchikan from 1952-1958. He also served as chaplain of a Methodist Hospital and a Methodist retirement community, in Pennsylvania before retiring in 1978.
He continued to work in retirement, returning to Alaska with his family where he served churches in the Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (1978-1983), Juneau (1984-1985), and again Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valleys (1985-1992). He retired for a second time in 1992 and moved to Tennessee and filled in as visiting pastor at several churches until 2007.
He was the first of three children, born in Binghamton, NY. His father was a Methodist minister as are his two brothers.
He is survived by wife Geraldine Bowen Havens; son, Alan (Mary Ellen) Havens; daughters, Lynne (Don) Lovett, Rana (Barry) Wise, and Maia (Amy) Havens; brothers Bradley and Robert Havens; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Memorial services were Nov. 12, at Westview United Methodist Church in Fairview, Tenn.
Funeral arrangements were by Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Franklin, Tenn.
