Longtime Wasilla resident, Richard “Dick” Vogt, 80, died Feb. 20, 2011, with his family by his side at his home.

Memorial services are at 11 a.m., Feb. 25, at the Valley Funeral Home, 151 East Herning Ave., Wasilla. Pastor Dan Bracken will officiate. Full military honors and inurnment follow at 1 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Dick was born Aug. 24, 1930, to Joseph and Rosella (Chadbourne) Vogt in Detroit Lakes, Minn. His stepmother, Mabel Westguard, raised him and he graduated from high school and attended some college. Dick entered the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Germany in the U.S. Constabulary, Korea and Vietnam. After 20 years in the military he retired and started a new occupation in the construction business as a carpenter.

Dick moved to Alaska in 1973, living in the Butte and Palmer/Wasilla areas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ham radio and gardening. He was a Master Gardener and loved to share his knowledge with other gardeners.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jeanette Mayberry and Carol Olds; sons, Norman and Dwayne; and daughter, Patricia Harder from his first marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Doris “Penny” Vogt of Wasilla; son, Richard Vogt Jr. of Anchorage; daughter, Dawn Vogt of Wasilla; three children from his first marriage, Mary and her husband Brian Guinn of Colorado, Shirley Bird of West Virginia and daughter Sandra Vogt; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Russell Vogt and his wife, Vicki, Norman Vogt and his wife Dorothy and George and his wife Sylvia, all of Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
