Richard Elwood

Palmer resident Richard “Dick” Elwood Atkin died July 8 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 79.

Dick was born in Adrian, Mich., on Feb.. 26, 1930. He moved to Alaska in 1962 with his wife and children, where he raised his family and ran his business, Day and Nite Auto Supply, in Anchorage. He retired in 1984 and returned to Michigan. In 2005, he returned to Palmer after the death of his beloved wife of 45 years. He spent his final years enjoying the company of his family. He loved family events with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in the simple pleasures of being surrounded by family.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Ivalo Atkin.

He is survived by his bother Dale Atkin, daughter and son-in-law Darlene and B. Alan Johnson of Sequim, Wash., son and daughter-in-law Rick and Lynne Atkin of Alaska, grandson and wife Greg and Dina Atkin, granddaughter and husband Tammy and Mike Oakley, granddaughter Tara Johnson and great-grandchildren Richard (namesake), Taylor, Alyssa, Tucker, Audrey, Gunner, Liam, Danae, Brianna, Ashlynn, Lauren, Tyler, Trevor and Corey.

The family would like to thank Dr. N. Beyelor and all the wonderful caring staff at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.

A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Arrangements were with Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.
