OBIT Schmelzer

It is with great sadness that the family of Richard L. Schmelzer announces his sudden passing on Oct. 18, 2017, while on vacation with his wife in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Rick was born to Harold and Barbara Schmelzer on July 2, 1959, in Medford, Oregon. Attending school in Talent, Oregon, until moving to Anchorage, Alaska with his family in 1973 where he attended Romig Middle and East High Schools, graduating in 1977. Rick took a leap of faith in 1980 and attended Alamon Training Center in Kalispell, Montana, where he was certified in telephone installation and repair, which led to a memorable and fulfilling career with Matanuska Telephone Association where he took great pride in his work and company for over 32 years. He was also a brother in the Local 1547 of IBEW for 33 years, retiring in 2015.

A resident of Wasilla for nearly 40 years, Rick enjoyed his second home and amigos at the Rose in Cabo for 23 years. God Bless. A true Alaskan, he had many adventures throughout the state with family and friends, whether it be fishing, hunting, softball (for which he won numerous awards) or just trying to flirt with the girl from Delta Junction. Memories were made and friendships were forged.

He is survived by his loving wife and willing accomplice of 18 years, Shannon Souhrada Schmelzer, children: Dustin Schmelzer; Cori Smith; Rikki Curtis; MacKenzie and Carrie Bowell; siblings Lisa Schmelzer (Michelle); David Schmelzer (Debbie); and Suzanne (Tony) Karagounis. He is also survived by grandchildren Kadyn, Reilly, Skyler, Travis, Lochlin, Bradley, Shiloh, and Audriana. Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his cousin Marty Garner and niece Alexanria Karagounis.

Please join the Schmelzer family in celebrating a life well lived and truly loved at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at the VFW Post 9635, 301 Lakeview Avenue, Wasilla, with Pastor Henry Woodall presiding. A potluck will held immediately following the service.
