Long-time Palmer resident Robert L Shoemaker, 85, passed away January 6th, 2021, at Mat-Su Regional Hospital.
No memorial service will be held at this time.
Robert was born on August 13,1935, in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Elizabeth and Clifford Shoemaker. He graduated from R.A Long High School in Longview, Washington in 1953. In 1956 he married his life-long love, Peggy Ann Blakeley.
Robert and Peggy moved to Alaska in 1981, where they bought their property in Palmer and moved the following year. Robert was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local Union 302.
In retirement he enjoyed restoring old trucks. He was active in several car clubs over the years and won numerous trophies for his classic trucks. Gardening was his passion; his large garden was his pride and joy. He was an active member of the Palmer Lions Club for more than 20 years.
Above all else, Robert dearly loved his family and cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren and his beloved dogs.
He is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, his wife, Peggy Shoemaker; their four children, David Shoemaker of Fairbanks, AK; Cynthia Hovland of Tucson, AZ; Scott Shoemaker of Edmonds, WA; and Greg and Karmen Shoemaker of Fairbanks, AK; his seven grandkids, Justin Carstens, Ryan Hovland, Lyndsey Bunting, Chelsie Peterson, Elizabeth Shoemaker, Alicia Herning, and Nathon Shoemaker; as well as his 11 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to your local Humane Society.
