Richardson National Cemetery 3 p.m. July 16. Pastor Dan Grisham will officiate. Those attending the service will need to be at the gate no later than 2:45 p.m. to be in the procession and be escorted to the cemetery.
Robert was born on Aug. 12, 1949 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John and Katherine (O’Hara) Greiling. Robert attended Halsey and Bushwick High School in Brooklyn.
He served from November of 1967 through November of 1973 with the U.S. Marine Corps, was stationed in North and South Carolina, California, and as a corporal during the Vietnam War assigned with K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, and 1st Marine Division of the U.S. Marine Corps. Bob received two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. He was very proud of his military duty.
After his service with the Marine Corps, Bob was employed with the Little Flower Nursing Home as a food service worker, as well as a residential painter in Long Island, N.Y. In the summer of 1977, Bob moved to Alaska and worked for the fisheries in the Aleutian Islands, traveled around Kodiak Island, lived in Anchorage, Peters Creek and called Sutton his home. Bob spent some time as a volunteer fireman with the Sutton Fire Department. Bob loved spending time with his family and watching movies. He also loved grocery shopping, spending time with his pets, and loved animals in general. Bob had a very good sense of humor.
Three years ago Bob reunited with his close friends with whom he served during the Vietnam War. He loved these fellow Marines very much. Bob recently accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a member of On Eagles Wings Ministry. Bob had a good heart and loved helping others when he could, his family wrote.
He is survived by his mother, Katherine Greiling; sisters, Barbara Schiermbock and Kathleen Greiling; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and David Muth; and brother, Thomas Greiling, all of Sutton; sons, Eric Greiling (BuJold) of New York, Ryan Greiling of Wasilla and Keith Greiling of Sutton; grandsons, Nicholas and Dylan of New York; granddaughter, Hannah of New York; as well as many nieces and nephews of Sutton and Wasilla.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John F. Greiling (also a Marine; killed in the Vietnam War in September of 1966) and father, John F. Greiling.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L. Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037 or at humansociety.org.
