Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Rod Young passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 27, 2017. Rod was born on May 14, 1929, to Ellen (Clark) Young and Roderick John Young in Edmonton, Alberta. Rod’s family farmed in Canada. Rod worked the family farm as well as other jobs until the age of 17 when he joined the Canadian Army (United Nations Forces). Rod was sent to Korea where he served for 465 days and upon his honorable discharge returned to Canada. Rod spent the 1970s and 1980s as a professional truck driver. Working routes through Canada such as the Dew Line, delivering mail and fuel.
In the late 1980s and 1990s Rod worked at Red Dog Mine as a driving instructor. At the Red Dog Mine, Rod met his future wife Kit Hart. Upon retiring from the Red Dog mine, Rod married Kit. They lived at Big Lake until the Millers Reach fire of 1996. Rod and Kit found a new home amongst friends on Robin Hood Lane shortly thereafter.
Rod is survived by wife Kit Young and children Jan Hart-Dinneen, Tod Hart, Charlie Hart, Jennifer Hart, Julie Beffort; Daughter Gina (Harvey Johnson) Ducharm of Texada Island, British Columbia; sisters Laverne Krogh, Maxine Bassanti and Margaret Skodi all of Alberta, Canada.
