Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Ronald Mart Smith, 70, died Dec. 13, 2010, at his Wasilla home.
A memorial service is at 1 p.m., Dec. 18, at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel, 1015 S. Check St., in Wasilla. Pastor John Jemar of Valley View Baptist Church in Eagle River will officiate. Smith’s cremated remains will be interred at Valley Memorial Park in Palmer in the spring.
Ron was born Feb. 3, 1940, in Westwood, Calif. He was a high school and trade school graduate. He was honorably discharged from the Navy Seabees division and was stationed in Bermuda during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local 367 for 50 years. He was former resident of Eagle River and had resided in Wasilla since 2000.
Ron was a member of Valley View Baptist Church in Eagle River, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmachining and his family.
“Ron was a man of the highest integrity and was totally devoted to his family,” his family wrote. “He lived sacrificially to provide for them. He fought a very hard battle with leukemia to stay with his family as long as possible and hated to leave them.”
Survivors are his wife, Gayle Smith; daughters Tiffany (Dean) Trboyevich and Tracy (Pete) McEnaney; granddaughters, Jaden and Jacquelyn Trboyevich, and Madison and Leah McEnaney; grandson, Ty McEnaney; brother Darrell (KeithAnn) Smith; brother, Bob Smith; and sister, Carmen Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Winona Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Willie and Floss Charles; and brother-in-law, Kelly Charles.
Arrangements were made by Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel and Crematory of Wasilla.
