Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Ronald “Ivan” Mason, 74, died May 30 of natural causes at his home in Anchorage. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Memorial Park in the Butte, with Pastor Peter Loughman officiating. Mr. Mason was born Aug. 1, 1934, in North Platte, Neb.
During 1954-1958 he served in the National Guard and the Army. He followed his parents and other family members to Alaska in 1965 where he worked for Bear Run Building Supply and Western Geophysical before working with the Anchorage School District, where he retired in 1997.
Although Ron resided in Anchorage he enjoyed spending time in the Valley at the family farm. Fishing, traveling in his motor home, and working with his dear friend Wanda at the Saturday Market were his favorite past times.
Ronald, or as his family knew him, Ivan, was a man of great integrity and character. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage and his involvement there was a fulfilling part of his life.
He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Lucille Mason and two brothers, Ernie and Darris Mason.
He is survived by, Arnold and Mary-Jane Mason, Stanley Mason, Elsa and Harold Akers, Janet Mason; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel in Anchorage.
