Sandra Lee Morgan
Sandra Lee Morgan, 79, passed away on the evening of August 21, 2022, at Mat-Su Regional Hospital, Alaska. Sandy was surrounded by loved ones and passed as the beautiful sun set. A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW Post 9365, 301 E Lake View Ave, in Wasilla beginning at 5pm on September 2nd.
Sandy, who was known by friends and family as “Nana”, was born June 11, 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, to Charles Melvin Porter and Dorothy Mae Marx. She married the love of her life, Carl Edwin Morgan, on February 23, 1963, in her hometown. She and Ed began a family together and had three children all born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.
As a young woman, Sandy went to school and became a registered nurse. Sandy began her 50-year fight with cancer in 1972 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her family made a brief move to Colorado in 1973 and eventually settled in Alaska in 1975 where she enjoyed her days as a homemaker and contributing to programs around the Mat-Su Valley. She served on the school board, as well as started the Wasilla Youth Soccer and Wasilla Youth Football Associations. In 1988 Sandy began working as the manager at the local movie theater, Mat-Su Cinema, of which in 1997 she purchased. Her beloved husband passed away in March of 1995 and Sandy never dated or remarried.
Over the 50-year battle with 16 separate types of cancers, Sandy fought with the support of her loved ones and the strength she found in the Lord. In retirement she dedicated her life to helping at her church and helping raise her grandchildren. In early 2021, Sandy was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer. Just a few short months into treatment for this cancer, she suffered from a chemo induced stroke. Sandy fought to recover from the stroke to enjoy time with loved ones and new great-grandchildren who were her entire world. Sandy was at peace knowing it was her time to go home to the Lord and finally be with her “Hunny” after 27 long years apart.
Of all her accomplishments, she believed her biggest achievement was her family. Sandy lived her life showing unremarkable kindness to not only family and loved ones but to all that she came in contact with and she attributed this to her faith in the Lord.
Sandy is survived by her children, Shawn Morgan, Heather McVeigh, Kelly Abbott, her 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son-in-law, and one grandchild.
