Scot Alan Starheim, 54, of Wasilla, died May 19, 2013, at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer after a courageous battle with cancer.

Father Scott Joseph Garrett will officiate at a funeral Mass in his honor at 1 p.m., May 28 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1201 Bogard Road, Wasilla. Burial follows at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery.

Scot was born in Renton, Wash. He grew up and attended schools in the Renton and Seattle area prior to moving to Alaska in 1977. He resided in Anchorage for a time and had lived many years in Wasilla. Scot had been successfully self-employed in the oil industry for many years.

For all who knew Scot, he was truly an original. He leaves behind a legacy of stories that reflect his deep feelings for family and the multitude of friends that he made wherever he went. He was a man of extreme integrity and generosity always willing to help others in his community. Always true to his word, anything discussed and agreed with a handshake became a contract as solid as a rock with Scot. He was clearly a “man’s man.” He had a strong sense of self, knew clearly who he was and did everything “his way” without apology. We have lost a great man, yet his spirit will remain with all of us forever in our hearts.

Scot’s hobbies included, but were not limited to, inventing, sketching, drawing … constantly thinking in advance of a better way to do just about everything, watching hockey — both the Alaska Aces (which he held season tickets) but more importantly watching his son Branson practicing and playing several times a week with his team. Scot loved golfing and fishing with friends, shrimping in Whittier, salmon fishing in Seward and Kenai, and halibut fishing in Homer.

On the many camping trips with family and friends, Scot would be the one planning and meticulously setting up all aspects of the campsite. Scot truly possessed a “Master’s Degree” in life.

Scot is survived by: his wife, Carmen and son, Branson Skot, of Wasilla; brothers, Ron (Annette) Starheim of Seattle, Wash., Karl Starheim of Wasilla and Erik (Christy) Starheim of Ocean Park, Wash.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tony Villasenor of Anchorage, Bryan (Teresa) Powell of Anchorage, Burt (Yamely) Wallace of Anchorage and Jose (Alondra Cano) Villasenor of Minneapolis, Minn.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Antonio (Apa) and Evangelina (Ama) Villasenor of Anchorage; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Scot was preceded in death by his parents, Arne and Ethel Starheim; and a nephew, John Casey Starheim.

Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla handled funeral arrangements for the family.
