Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Alaskan and Wasilla resident Shane Jonathan Mahar, 39, died at his home July 29, 2011.
Memorial services in honor of Shane are at 3 p.m., Aug. 6 at Valley Funeral Home Chapel, 151 E. Herning Ave., Wasilla.
Shane was born Oct. 23, 1971, in Anchorage at the old community hospital to Gordon Mahar and Cheryl Barratt.
Formally from Chugiak, Shane moved to the Mat-Su Valley in 1986 and graduated from Palmer High School in 1990. Shane loved hockey and played from the time he was a young boy at age 4 through his senior year of high school. After graduating, Shane commercial fished and soon after started his own construction company.
The family wrote, “Shane loved Alaska and everything that came with it. The thing he enjoyed most was racing his sled.”
Loving the outdoors, Shane also helped his father with his business, Denali Wilderness Safaris.
Shane is survived by his son, Chesye Mahar of Wasilla; father, Gordon Mahar of Cantwell; mother, Cheryl Bird of Grandy, Minn.; sister, Brandy Mahar of Minnesota; aunt and uncle-in-law, Joann and Rick of Wasilla; uncle Ramon and aunt Annie of Kenai. Shane had numerous cousins in Kenai and Palmer.
Valley Funeral Home and Crematory cared for the family.
