Stanley Joseph Banuskevich

Stanley Joseph Banuskevich, 69, died Feb. 26, 2013,

He was born Feb. 12, 1944, in Nashua, N.H., to Joseph and Agnes Banuskevich. He attended Nashua High School, where he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and graduated with honors. He then attended the University of New Hampshire in Plymouth, earning his degree in Social Studies.

Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in both the Korean and the Vietnam wars while attaining the rank of captain. During his seven-plus years with the Army, Stanley was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal in Korea; the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars; the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.

Stanley always had a love for history, and after his honorable service to his country, he went back to New Hampshire to begin his career as a high school history teacher. He later moved to Deer Park, Texas, where he continued his teaching career, met and married his darling wife Laurie in 1990 and retired in 2009. Later that year, he loaded up his car and wife and moved to Alaska to be closer to family.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 23 years, Laurie; children, Steven and Stephanie; son-in-law, Louis; daughter-in-law, Audra; brother, Robert; five granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family would also like to acknowledge Pat McPherson, who was Stan’s caretaker, friend and constant companion his last year of life.

His wife asks that in lieu of flowers to please donate to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. A viewing with funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., March 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wasilla. Burial with full military honors is at 2:30 p.m., March 7 at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
