Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Palmer resident, 64, passed away January 12, 2019, while at home.
Sterling was born on April 9, 1954 in Washington D. C. to Marvin and Donna Nielsen. He participated in the class of 1972 at East High School. He married Irene Wells on March 17, 1978 in Anchorage, Alaska.
Sterling joined the Navy and attended SeaBees Training. He was a part of the Mobile Construction Battalion MCB5 as a CM3. Later he worked with the Civil Engineer and retired in 2001. Sterling enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping with his family, cruising in hot rods and flying model airplanes he built. He had a love for his country, cars and most of all, his wife.
He is survived by his two daughters and 4 grandchildren, Sheila Woods and her children Brooke Woods and Bria Woods of Palmer Alaska, Shala Nielsen and her children Nicolette Cravens and Jordan Cravens of Tacoma, Washington, his Brother Marvin Nielsen and his wife Catherine Nielsen of Easton, Maryland, his sister Suzanna Krutsch and her husband Scott Krutsch of Cary, North Carolina, and his sister in law Kim Nielsen of Willow Street, Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews. Sterling was preceded in death by his wife Irene Nielsen and brother Philip Nielsen. The family asks that donations be made to the Palmer Church of the Nazarene in Lieu of flowers.
