Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Steven Daniel Lovell, 56, died in an accident June 30, 2013 in Wasilla when a piece of heavy equipment he was using to set up a jump for a dirt bike ran over him.
Steve was born Aug. 21, 1956, in Petaluma, Calif. He attended Yreka High School from 1969-73, attended Anchorage Community College from 1986-87 and was the student body president. He moved to Alaska in 1978 and resided in Glennallen from 1978-85 and moved to Wasilla in 1986.
Steve was employed by Bishop Trucking from 1978-85 and was the VP of its General Commodities Division. He was the owner of Valley Diesel and Marine for 25 years in Wasilla. He was a Golden Eagle NRA member and a member of Montague Methodist Church. Steve was also a Gold Level Contributor to 4-H, Who’s Who of American Jr. Colleges 1986-1987, and was a Wasilla City Councilman 2012-2013. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and his Harley.
This has been a tragic year for the Lovell family. At the end of May, Steve’s son, Shanon, who had been missing since October, was found in a Palmer area lake. A service for Shanon was scheduled this month, which in the event of this tragedy with Steve, the family has planned a double service for both Steve and Shanon at 1 p.m., July 9 at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla with Steve’s uncle from California, Pastor John Dye, officiating.
Steve served his country in the U.S. Army from 1973-1976 and he will be commemorated with military honors.

Steve is survived by his fiancée, Jolene Hester of Wasilla; son, Clayton Lovell of California; daughter, Cindy Lovell of Germany; grandson/son, Cyrus Lovell of Wasilla; granddaughters, Jamie Lovell and Emily Lovell of Germany, Marissa Lovell of Anchorage and Genesis Lovell of Wasilla; mother, Margie Handley; father, Gordon Lovell; brothers, Ron Lovell and David Lovell, all of California; and 10 nieces and nephews, all of California.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
