Troy Hollen, 77, passed away peacefully Nov. 25, 2017, at his home in Wasilla, Alaska, after a battle with Alzheimer’s. Troy was born Dec. 19, 1939, in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Texas where he graduated high school in Corpus Christi in 1957. After graduating high school, Troy moved with his family to California. While in California, Troy met his first wife, whom he married in 1959. Troy joined the US Navy in 1958 and was stationed in San Diego, California, where he served as an Airplane Electrician on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard. He received a Good Conduct Medal while in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1963.
Troy had four sons and two daughters. He worked as a lineman in California until he and his family moved to Kansas. While in Kansas Troy worked as an employee for the City of Lakin before eventually being hired on with Colorado Interstate Gas (CIG). They moved between Lakin, Kansas, Rawlins, Wyoming, and Elkhart, Kansas, with CIG. It was in Elkhart, in 1981, where he was divorced from his first wife. A few years later Troy moved to Wamsutter, Wyoming, where he met, fell in love with and married, Shirleymae. She owned the Broadway Café in Wamsutter, which is where they met. A few years after Troy retired from CIG, around 1998, they decided to move to Wasilla, Alaska.
Troy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1986 and held many service positions including branch president, financial clerk and served a three-year mission with Shirleymae at the Bishops Storehouse in Palmer, Alaska. Serving others was one of the most important things in his life. He was well known and respected within his community. Although he was 6’3”, he was incredibly thoughtful with a gentle spirit. His home was always open to anyone that needed a meal, a kind word or wanted to feel surrounded by family.
Troy is survived by sons Bill, Mark, and Nathan, daughters Denise McCarrell and Sherree Wiggin, step-daughter Lynette Barrett, step-son Loren Jones, 27 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirleymae, brothers Lee and George, son Tim, step-son Tommy Jones and grandson Tyler Jones.
